HTC’s new One M9 and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones all seem fantastic, and we were thoroughly impressed by each and every one when we previewed them at Mobile World Congress. It’s not uncommon for phones to heat up during testing, as 9to5Google points out, but it seems to be excessive with the One M9. There’s been some speculation that the overheating could be caused by the chip that powers the phone, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810. Samsung reportedly opted not to use that processor for its Galaxy S6 because of overheating issues.

On benchmarks, we're seeing much higher random read and write scores on the Nexus 6 with 5.1. random read gets a 2x speed boost, while random write is a whopping 9x faster. The same dramatic speed boosts aren't present on the Nexus 5, and we suspect the difference is that the Nexus 6 is encrypted while the Nexus 5 is not. According to Francisco Franco, a longtime thirdparty Android kernel developer, Google is now using NEON instructions on the Nexus 6 to speed up encryption performance. Performance could be further improved by enabling hardwareaccelerated encryption, which the Nexus 6 still doesn't use, but Google has been experimenting with the feature in the Android Open Source Project.

The One is arguably the best MEIZU M1 Android phone for a power user, with more settings to tweak than any other. But it’s also an excellent allround phone with a decent camera, snappy experience, solid battery life of over a day and 16 or 64GB of storage.

The S range appears to be where Samsung’s bleedingedge technology is on display, like the dual curved screen of the S6 Edge, for example. The A range, by contrast, will offer you a nicely designed handset that has solid but not market leading specs, all at a more affordable price.
